Confessio

A popular medieval penitential work that often appeared in Books of the Hours. It is composed of verses from the psalms that seek to stir one to repentance and seek God's forgiveness. The verses below have been cross referenced with the Psalms from the Vulgate.

Amen. Deign to receive, Lord God almighty, these consecrated verses, which I wish to recite upon my knees in honor of Thy name for me, a wretched unworthy sinner, and for all my sins, whether by action, by deed, by speech, by perverse thoughts, by desire, or by my negligence, large or small. May these verses bring me the remission of all my sins, a life well lived, a true and worthy repentance, and to eternal life. Amen.

Psalter of St. Jerome
VERBA mea auribus percipe, Domine, intellege clamorem meum. Intende voci orationis meae, Rex meus et Deus meus. [Ps 5:2-3] GIVE ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my cry. Hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God. [Ps 5:2-3]
Domine, ne in ira tua arguas me, neque in furore tuo corripias me. Miserere mihi, Domine, quoniam infirmus sum. [Ps 6:2-5] O Lord, rebuke me not in Thy indignation, nor chastise me in Thy wrath. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak: heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled, and my soul is troubled greatly: but Thou, O Lord, how long? Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul. [Ps 6:2-5]
Salvum me fac ex omnibus persequentibus me; et libera me. [Ps 7:2] Miserere mihi, Domine. Vide humilitatem meam de inimicis meis. [Ps 9:14] Save me from all that persecute me, and deliver me. [Ps 7:2] Have mercy on me, O Lord. See my humiliation which I suffer from my enemies. [Ps 9:14]
Respice, et exaudi me, Domine Deus meus. Illumina oculos meos, ne unquam obdormiam in morte. [Ps 12:4] Consider, and hear me, O Lord, my God. Enlighten my eyes, that I never sleep in death. [Ps 12:4]
Ego clamavi, quoniam exaudisti me, Deus. Inclina aurem tuam mihi, et exaudi verba mea. Mirifica misericordias tuas, Domine, qui salvos facis sperantes in te. Custodi me, Domine, ut pupillam oculi. Sub umbra alarum tuarum protege me a facie impiorum qui me afflixerunt. [cf Ps 16:5-9] Keep my steps steadfast in Thy paths, that my footsteps may not falter. I have cried to Thee, for Thou, O God, hast heard me. Incline Thy ear unto me, and hear my words. Shew forth Thy wonderful mercies; Thou who savest those who hope in Thee. Guard me, as the apple of Thy eye. Protect me under the shadow of Thy wings from the face of the wicked who have afflicted me. [cf Ps 16:5-9]
[cf Ps 18:13] From my hidden faults cleanse me, O Lord, and from those of others spare Thy servant. [cf Ps 18:13]
Tu autem, Domine, ne longe facias miserationes tuas a me. Salva me ex ore leonis, et a cornibus unicornium humilitatem meam. [Ps 21:20-22] But Thou, O Lord, be not far from me; look towards my defense. Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword:and from the grip of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth; and my wretchedness from the horns of wild bulls. [Ps 21:20-22]
Vias tuas, Domine, notas fac mihi, et semitas tuas edoce me: et dirige me in veritate tua. Propter bonitatem tuam, Domine, propter nomen tuum, Domine, propitiaberis peccato meo. Copiosum est enim. [cf Ps 24:4-11] Shew me, O Lord, Thy ways and teach me Thy paths. Direct me in Thy truth. Remember, O Lord, Thy pity and Thy mercies which are from the ages. The sins of my youth and my ignorance remember not. According to Thy mercy remember me: for Thy goodness' sake, O Lord. For Thy name's sake, O Lord, Thou wilt pardon my sin: for it is great. [cf Ps 24:4-11]
Ne avertas faciem tuam a me, et ne declines in ira a servo tuo. Adiutor meus esto. Ne derelinquas me, neque despicias me, Deus salutaris meus. Legem pone mihi, Domine, in via tua; et dirige me in semitam rectam propter inimicos meos. Ne tradideris me in animas persequentium me. [cf Ps 26:7-12] See my lowliness and my toil; and forgive me all my sins. [Ps 24:18] Take not away my soul, O God, with the wicked: nor my life with bloody men. [Ps 25:9] Hear, O Lord, my voice, with which I have cried to Thee. Have mercy on me and hear me. Turn not away Thy face from me; nor in Thy wrath turn from Thy servant. Be Thou my helper. Forsake me not, nor despise me, O God my Savior. Set before me, O Lord, the law in Thy way, and guide me in the right path, because of my adversaries. Deliver me not to those that persecute me. [cf Ps 26:7-12]
Ad te, Domine, clamabo. Deus meus, ne sileas a me, et ero similis descendentibus in lacum. [Ps 27:9] Unto Thee will I cry, O Lord. O my God, be not silent to me: lest I become like those that go down into the pit. Hear, O Lord, the voice of my supplication when I pray to Thee and lift up my hands to Thy holy temple. Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity destroy me not. [Ps 27:1-3] Save, O Lord, Thy people, and bless Thy inheritance. Rule them and exalt them for ever. [Ps 27:9]
In te, Domine, speravi: non confundar in aeternum, in tua iustitia libera me. Inclina ad me aurem tuam, accelera ut eripias me. Esto mihi in Deum protectorem et in locum refugii, ut salvum me facias. In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. Redemisti me, Domine, Deus veritatis. [cf Ps 30:2-6] In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me never be put to shame. In Thy justice, deliver me. Incline Thy ear to me, make haste to deliver me. Be Thou unto me a God, a protector, and a place of refuge to save me. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth. [cf Ps 30:2-6]
Eripe me de manibus inimicorum meorum, et a persequentibus me. Illumina faciem tuam super servum tuum, et salvum me fac in tua misericordia. Domine, non confundar, quoniam invocavi te. [Ps 30:16-18] Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos, sicut speravimus in te. [Ps 32:22] Deliver me from the hands of my enemies and from them that persecute me. Let Thy face shine upon Thy servant. Save me in Thy mercy. Let me not be put to shame, O Lord, for I have called upon Thee. [Ps 30:16-18] Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have hoped in Thee. [Ps 32:22]
Iudica, Domine, nocentes me: expugna impugnantes me. Apprehende arma et scutum et exsurge in adiutorium mihi. [Ps 34:1-2] Judge Thou, O Lord, them that wrong me: overthrow them that fight against me. Take hold of arms and shield, and rise up to help me. [Ps 34:1-2]
Ne sileas, Domine, ne discedas a me. Exsurge, Domine, intende iudicium meum. Deus meus et Dominus meus, in causam meam. Iudica me secundum misericordiam tuam, Domine Deus meus. [Ps 34:22-24] Be Thou not silent, O Lord, depart not from me. Rise up and be attentive to my judgment, to my cause, my God, and my Lord. Judge me according to Thy justice, and let them not rejoice over me, O Lord my God. [Ps 34:22-24]
[Ps 35:11-12] Extend Thy mercy to them that know Thee, and Thy justice to them that are righteous in heart. Let not the foot of proud overtake me nor the hand of the sinner disturb me. [Ps 35:11-12]
Ne derelinquas me, Domine Deus meus, ne discesseris a me. Intende in adiutorium meum, Domine Deus salutis meae. [Ps 37:22-23] Forsake me not, O Lord my God: be not far from me. Attend unto my help, O Lord, the God of my salvation. [Ps 37:22-23]
Exaudi, Deus, orationem meam et deprecationem meam. Auribus percipe lacrimas meas: ne sileas a me, quoniam incola ego sum apud te in terra et peregrinus sicut omnes patres mei. [Ps 38:13-14] Hear, O Lord, my prayer and my supplication. Give ear to my tears. Be not silent: for I am but a wayfarer before Thee, a pilgrim as all my fathers were. O forgive me, that I may be refreshed, before I go hence, and be no more. [Ps 38:13-14]
Tu autem, Domine, ne longe facias misericordias tuas a me: misericordia tua et veritas tua semper susceperunt me, quoniam circumdederunt me mala, quorum non est numerus. Complaceat tibi, Domine, ut eripias me, Domine, in auxilium meum respice. [Ps 39:12-14] O Lord, withhold not Thy tender mercies from me: Thy mercy and Thy truth have always upheld me. For evils without number have surrounded me. My iniquities have overtaken me so that I am unable to see. They are more numerous than the hairs of my head: and my heart has failed me. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me. Look down, O Lord, to help me. [Ps 39:12-14]
Ego vero egenus et pauper sum. Deus, adiuva me. [Ps 69:6] I am needy and poor; O God, help me. Thou art my helper and my deliverer: O Lord, do not delay. [Ps 69:6]
Ego dixi: Domine, miserere mei, sana animam meam, quia peccavi tibi. [Ps 40:5] I said: O Lord, have mercy on me, heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee. [Ps 40:5]
Exsurge, quare obdormis, Domine? Exsurge, et ne repellas in finem. Quare faciem tuam avertis? Oblivisceris inopiam nostram et tribulationem nostram? Exsurge, Domine, adiuva nos et libera nos propter nomen tuum. [cf Ps 43:23-26] Arise! Why sleepest Thou, O Lord? Arise and cast us off not forever! Why hidest Thou Thy face from us and forgetest our want and our trouble? Arise, O Lord. Help us and redeem us for the sake of Thy name. [cf Ps 43:23-26]
Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam: et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam. Amplius lava me ab iniustitia mea, et a delicto meo munda me. [Ps 50:3-4] Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis, et omnes iniquitates meas dele. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus, et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne proiicias me a facie tua, et Spiritum Sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui et Spiritu principali confirma me. Domine, labia mea aperies, et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam. [Ps 50:11-17] Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies, blot out my iniquity. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. [Ps 50:3-4] Turn away Thy face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Create a clean heart in me, O God: and steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not away from Thy face and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. O Lord, Thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. [Ps 50:11-17]
Deus, in nomine tuo salvum me fac, et in virtute tua libera me. Deus, exaudi orationem. Auribus percipe verba oris mei. [Ps 53:3-4] O God, in Thy name, save me and in Thy strength deliver me. O God, hear my prayer. Give ear to the words of my mouth. [Ps 53:3-4]
Intende in me, et exaudi me. [Ps 54:2-3] Hear, O God, my prayer, and despise not my supplication. Be attentive to me and hear me. [Ps 54:2-3]
In Deo laudabo verbum, et in Domino laudabo sermonem: in Deo sperabo, non timebo quid faciat mihi homo. In me sunt, Deus, vota quae reddam, laudationes tibi, quoniam eripuisti animam meam de morte, oculos meos a lacrimis, pedes meos a lapsu, ut placeam coram Domino in lumine viventium. [Ps 55:11-13] In God will I praise the word, in the Lord will I praise his speech. In God I will I hope. I will not fear what man can do to me. I am bound, O God, by vows to Thee which I will pay, praises to Thee, because Thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I be acceptable in the sight of God, in the light of the living. [Ps 55:11-13]
Miserere mei, Deus, miserere mei, quoniam in te confidit anima mea: et in umbra alarum tuarum sperabo, donec transeat iniquitas. [Ps 56:2] Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me: for my soul trusteth in Thee. And in the shadow of Thy wings will I hope, until iniquity passes away. [Ps 56:2]
Eripe me de inimicis meis, Deus meus, et ab insurgentibus in me libera me. Eripe me de operantibus iniquitatem, et de viris sanguinum salva me: quia ecce occupaverunt animam meam, irruerunt in me fortes. [Ps 58:2-4] Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; and defend me from them that rise up against me. Deliver me from them that work iniquity, and save me from bloody men. For behold they have caught my soul: the mighty have rushed in upon me. [Ps 58:2-4]
Ego vero orationem meam ad te, Domine, tempus beneplaciti, Deus. In multitudine misericordiae tuae exaudi me, in veritate salutis tuae. Eripe me de luto, ut non inhaeream. Libera me ex odientibus me, et de profundo aquarum, non me demergat tempestas aquae, neque absorbeat me profundum, neque urgeat super me puteus os suum. Exaudi me, Domine, quoniam benigna est misericordia tua; secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum respice in me. Ne avertas faciem tuam a puero tuo, quoniam tribulor. Velociter exaudi me. Intende animae meae et libera eam; propter inimicos meos eripe me. [Ps 68:14-19] As for me, my prayer is to Thee, O Lord; for the time of Thy good pleasure, O God. In the multitude of Thy mercy hear me, in the truth of Thy salvation. Draw me out of the mire, that I may not stick fast: deliver me from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. Let not the tempest of water drown me, nor the deep water swallow me up, nor the pit close its mouth over me. Hear me, O Lord, for Thy mercy is kind; look upon me according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies. Turn not away Thy face from Thy servant: for I am in trouble. Hear me speedily. Attend to my soul and deliver it. Save me because of my enemies. [Ps 68:14-19]
Deus, in adiutorium meum intende; Domine, ad adiuvandum me festina. Ego vero egenus et pauper sum. Deus, adiuva me. [cf Ps 69] O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me. I am needy and poor; O God, help me. Thou art my helper and my deliverer: O Lord, make do not delay. [cf Ps 69]
In te, Domine, speravi: non confundar in aeternum. In tua iustitia libera me et eripe me. Inclina ad me aurem tuam: accelera ut eripias me. Esto mihi in Deum protectorem et in locum refugii, ut salvum me facias. Et tu, Domine, adiutor fortis. Repleatur os meum laude tua, ut possim cantare gloriam tuam tota die magnificentiam tuam. Ne proiicias me in tempore senectutis, dum defecerit virtus mea. Deus, ne derelinquas me; Deus, ne elonges a me. Deus meus, in auxilium meum respice: ego autem semper in te sperabo, Domine, et adiiciam super omnem laudem tuam: os meum pronuntiabit iustitiam tuam, tota die salutare tuum. [cf Ps 70:1-15] O Lord, I have hoped, let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in Thy justice, and rescue me. Incline Thy ear unto me, and save me. Be Thou unto me God, a protector, and a place of strength, that Thou mayest make me safe. Thou, O Lord, art a strong helper. Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise, that I may sing Thy glory all day long, Thy greatness. Cast me not off in my old age: when my strength shall fail, do not Thou forsake me. O God, be not Thou far from me: O my God, make haste to my help. I will always hope; and will add to all Thy praise. My mouth shall shew forth Thy justice; Thy salvation all the day long. [cf Ps 70:1-15]
Respice in testamentum tuum, quia repleti sunt terrae domorum iniquitatum. [Ps 73:19-20] Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to Thee and forget not in the end the souls of Thy poor. Have regard for Thy covenant: for the lands are filled with houses of iniquity.
Adiuva nos, Deus salutaris noster, et propter honorem nominis tui, Domine, libera nos, et propitius esto peccatis nostris propter nomen tuum. [Ps 78:9] Help us, O God, our savior, and for the glory of Thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for Thy name's sake. [Ps 78:9]
[Ps 79:3-4] Stir up Thy might and come to save us. Turn to us, O God, and shew us Thy face and we shall be saved. [Ps 79:3-4]
Converte nos, Deus salutaris noster, et averte iram tuam a nobis: ut non in aeternum irascaris nobis, neque extendas iram tuam a progenie in progenies. Deus, tu convertens vivificabis nos, et plebs tua laetabitur in te. Ostende nobis, Domine, misericordiam tuam, et salutare tuum da nobis. [Ps 84:5-8] Restore us, O God our savior, and turn Thy anger from us, so Thou wilt not be angry with us forever nor extend Thy wrath from generation to generation. Thou wilt, O God, bring us to life and Thy people shall rejoice in Thee. Shew us, O Lord, Thy mercy; and grant us Thy salvation. [Ps 84:5-8]
Inclina, Domine, aurem tuam ad me et exaudi me, quoniam egenus et pauper sum ego. Custodi animam meam quoniam sanctus sum. Et tu, Domine Deus meus, miserator et misericors, patiens et multum misericors, et verax, respice in me, et miserere mei: da potestatem puero tuo, et salvum fac filium ancillae tuae. Fac mecum, Domine, signum in bonum, ut videant qui me oderunt et confundantur, quoniam tu, Domine, adiuvasti me. [cf Ps 85] Incline Thy ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am needy and poor. Guard my soul, for I am holy. Save Thy servant, O my God, who trusteth in Thee. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I have cried to Thee all the day. Give joy to the soul of Thy servant, for to Thee, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul. For Thou, O Lord my God, art merciful, patient, and of much mercy, look upon me, and have mercy on me: give strength to Thy servant, and save the son of Thy handmaid. Make me a sign for good, that they who hate me may see and be confounded, because Thou, O Lord, hast helped me. [cf Ps 85]
Intret oratio mea in conspectu tuo: inclina aurem tuam ad precem meam, Domine. [Ps 87:2-3] O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before Thee. Let my prayer come before Thee, incline Thy ear to my prayer. [Ps 87:2-3]
Ubi sunt misericordiae tuae antiquae, Domine, sicut iurasti David in veritate tua? Memor esto opprobrii servorum tuorum quod continui in sinu meo multarum gentium. [Ps 88:50-51] Lord, where are Thy mercies of old as Thou didst swear to David in Thy truth? Be mindful, O Lord, of the reproach of Thy servants which I have held in my bosom of many nations. [Ps 88:50-51]
Converte, Domine, aliquantulum, et deprecare super servos tuos. [Ps 89:13] Et sit splendor Domini Dei nostri super nos, et opera manuum nostrarum dirige super nos. [Ps 89:17] Domine, exaudi orationem meam, et clamor meus ad te perveniat. Ne avertas faciem tuam a me: in quacumque die tribulor, inclina ad me aurem tuam in quacumque die invocavero te, velociter exaudi me. [Ps 101:2-3] Return, O Lord, how long? and be entreated in favor of Thy servants. [Ps 89:13] And let the splendor of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct Thou the works of our hands over us. [Ps 89:17] Hear, O Lord, my prayer: and let my cry come to Thee. Turn not away Thy face from me. In the day when I am in trouble, incline Thy ear to me. On whatever day I call upon Thee, hear me speedily. [Ps 101:2-3]
Ne educas me in dimidio dierum meorum in generationem et generationem anni tui. [Ps 108:21-23] Adiuva me, Domine Deus meus, et salvum me fac propter misericordiam tuam. [Ps 108:26] Call me not away in the midst of my days, through generation and generation of Thy years But Thou, O Lord, do with me for Thy name's sake: because Thy mercy is sweet. Do Thou deliver me, for I am poor and needy, and my heart is troubled within me. Like a shadow when it falls, I pass away. I am swept away like locusts. [Ps 108:21-23] Help me, O Lord my God. Save me according to Thy mercy. [Ps 108:26]
Incola ego sum in terra: non abscondas a me mandata tua. [Ps 118:17-19] Give bountifully to Thy servant that I may live and keep Thy words. Open my eyes and I will consider the wonders of Thy law. I am a sojourner in the land: hide not Thy commandments from me. [Ps 118:17-19]
Confirma me, Domine, in sermonibus tuis. Viam iniquitatis amove a me, et de lege tua miserere mei. [Ps 118:28] Deduc me in semitam mandatorum tuorum, quia ipsam volui. In via tua vivifica me. Statue servo tuo eloquium tuum in timore tuo. [Ps 118:35-38] Strengthen me in Thy words. Remove from me the way of iniquity, and out of Thy law have mercy on me Lead me in the path of Thy commandments, for this I have desired. Incline my heart to Thy testimonies and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes lest they behold vanity, but give my life in Thy way. Establish Thy word in Thy servant, in Thy fear. [Ps 118:35-38]
Bonitatem, et disciplinam, et scientiam doce me, quia in mandatis tuis credidi. [Ps 118:66] Bonus es tu, Domine, et in bonitate tua doce me iustificationes tuas. [Ps 118:68] Fiat nunc, Domine, misericordia tua, ut consoletur me secundum eloquium tuum servo tuo. Voluntaria oris mei beneplacita fac, Domine, et iudicia tua doce me. [Ps 118:107-108] Suscipe me secundum eloquium tuum, et vivam, et ne confundas me ab expectatione mea. Adiuva me, et salvus ero, et meditabor in tuis iustificationibus. [Ps 118:116-117] Fac cum servo tuo secundum misericordiam tuam et iustificationes tuas doce me. Servus tuus sum ego: da mihi intellectum, ut sciam testimonia tua. [Ps 118:124-125] Respice in me, et miserere mei secundum iudicium diligentium nomen tuum. Redime me a calumniis hominum, ut custodiam mandata tua. Make Thy face to shine upon Thy servant: and teach me Thy statutes. [Ps 118:132-135] Hear my voice, O Lord, according to Thy mercy: and give me life according to Thy ordinances. [Ps 118:149]
Vide humilitatem meam et eripe me, quia legem tuam non sum oblitus. Iudica iudicium meum et redime me: propter eloquium tuum vivifica me. [Ps 118:153-154] Appropiet oratio mea in conspectu tuo, Domine, secundum eloquium tuum da mihi intellectum. Intret postulatio mea in conspectu tuo, Domine, secundum eloquium tuum eripe me. Eructabunt labia mea hymnum, cum docueris me iustificationes tuas. Pronuntiabit lingua mea eloquia tua, quia omnia mandata tua aequitas. Fiat manus tua, ut salvum me faciat, quia mandata tua elegi. Require servum tuum, Domine, quia mandata tua non sum oblitus. [Ps 118:169-176] See my humiliation and deliver me, for I have not forgotten Thy law. Plead my cause and redeem me, for the sake of Thy word give me life. [Ps 118:153-154] Let my supplication, O Lord, come into Thy sight: give me understanding according to Thy word. Let my request come in before Thee; deliver Thou me according to Thy word. My lips shall utter a hymn, when Thou shalt teach me Thy statutes. My tongue shall pronounce Thy word: because all Thy commandments are just. Let Thy hand be with me to save me; for I have chosen Thy precepts. I have longed for Thy salvation, O Lord; and Thy law is my meditation. My soul shall live and shall praise Thee: and Thy statutes shall help me. I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost: seek Thy servant, because I have not forgotten Thy commandments. [Ps 118:169-176]
Miserere nobis, Domine, miserere nobis, quia multum repleti sumus contemptione. [Ps 122:3] Benefac, Domine, bonis et rectis corde. [Ps 124:4] Converte, Domine, captivitatem nostram sicut torrens in austro. [Ps 125:4] De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine. Domine, exaudi vocem meam. Fiant aures tuae intendentes in orationem servi tui. [Ps 129:1-2] In quacumque die invocavero te, exaudi me: multiplicabis in anima mea virtutem tuam, [Ps 137:3] et deduc me, Domine, in via aeterna. [Ps 138:24] Pone, Domine, custodiam ori meo, et ostium circumstantiae labiis meis. Non declines cor meum in verbum malum. [Ps 140:3-4] Intende in humilitatem meam, quia humiliatus sum nimis. Libera me a persequentibus me, quoniam confortati sunt super me. Me expectant iusti, donec retribuas mihi. [Ps 141:7-8] Domine, exaudi orationem meam: in veritate exaudi me: in tua iustitia: et ne intres in iudicium cum servo tuo, quia non iustificabitur in conspectu tuo omnis vivens. Quia persecutus est inimicus animam meam, humiliavit in terra vitam meam. [cf Ps 142:1-3] Velociter exaudi me, Domine, defecit spiritus meus. Ne avertas faciem tuam a me, et ero similis descendentibus in lacum. Auditam mihi fac mane misericordiam tuam. Notam fac mihi viam in qua ambulem, quia ad te, Domine, levavi animam meam. Eripe me de inimicis meis. Domine, ad te confugi, doce me facere voluntatem tuam, quia tu es Deus meus. Spiritus tuus bonus deducet me in viam rectam, propter nomen tuum, Domine, vivificabis me in aequitate tua. [Ps 142:7-12] Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us: for we are much filled with contempt. [Ps 122:3] Do good, O Lord, to those that are good, and to the upright of heart. [Ps 124:4] Make our captivity, O Lord, like a flowing stream in the south. [Ps 125:4] Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. Let Thy ears be attentive to the prayer of Thy servant. [Ps 129:1-2] On whatever day I call upon Thee, hear me. Thou shalt multiply the strength in my soul, [Ps 137:3] and lead me, O Lord, in the way of old. [Ps 138:24] Set a guard, O Lord, on my mouth: and a door round about my lips. Incline not my heart to evil words. [Ps 140:3-4] Attend to my cry: for I have been brought low indeed. Deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I. Lead my soul out of prison, that I may praise Thy name. The just wait for me, until Thou reward me. [Ps 141:7-8] Hear, O Lord, my prayer: in Thy truth and Thy justice hear me. Enter not into judgment with Thy servant: for in Thy sight no one living shall be justified. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul: he hath brought down my life in the land. [cf Ps 142:1-3] Hear me quickly, O Lord: my spirit hath fainted away. Turn not away Thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Let me hear Thy mercy in the morning; for in Thee have I hoped. Make the way known to me, wherein I should walk: for I have lifted up my soul to Thee. Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, to Thee have I fled. Teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God. Thy good spirit shall lead me onto the right path. On account of Thy name, O Lord, Thou wilt preserve me in Thy justice. Thou wilt bring my soul out of trouble. And in Thy mercy Thou wilt destroy my enemies. Thou wilt cut off all them that afflict my soul: for I am Thy servant. [Ps 142:7-12]
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
In hoc cognovi quoniam voluisti me, quoniam non gaudebit inimicus meus super me. Me autem propter innocentiam suscepisti, et confirmasti me in conspectu tuo in aeternum. Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel a saeculo usque in saeculum. Fiat, Fiat. [Ps 40:11-14] In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. Redemisti me, Domine Deus veritatis: salus mea de manu Domini, et gloria mea in conspectu Dei [cf Ps 30:6] I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall be always in my mouth. [Ps 33:2] To Thee alone have I sinned, and have done evil before Thee. [Ps 50:6] My sin I have acknowledged to Thee, and my injustice I have not concealed. I said I will confess my iniquities to the Lord: and Thou hast forgiven the wickedness of my sin. For this shall every holy man pray to Thee in due time. [Ps 31:5-6] But Thou, O Lord, have pity on me, and raise me up that I may requite them. In this I have known Thou hast chosen me, for my enemy shall not rejoice over me. Thou hast upheld me on account of my innocence and hast established me in Thy sight for ever. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. So be it. So be it. [Ps 40:11-14] Into Thy hands I commend my spirit: Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth. My salvation is from the hand of the Lord and my glory in the sight of God. [cf Ps 30:6]
Oratio in tribulatione
(Threnus Sancti Augustini)
Prayer in Tribulation
(Threnus of St Augustine)
Confitemur in correptione, quod fecimus: obliviscimur in visitatione quod flevimus. If we place before Thy eyes, O Lord, our misdeeds and the wounds we receive, the less we suffer and the greater we merit. We feel the punishment for sin, yet we do not shun our obstinacy in sinning. Our fragile nature is shattered by Thy scourges, yet our evil ways remain unchanged. The sick mind is wrenched and the stiff neck is not bent. Life sighs in pain and yet it does not amend itself. If Thou waiteth, we do not reform, if Thou punisheth, we do not last. When accused, we admit what we have done, yet when punished, we forget. If Thou punisheth, we make promises; if Thou holdeth back the sword, we do not carry out our promises. If Thou strike us, we cry out that Thou might spare us; if Thou sparest us, we again provoke Thee to strike us. If difficulties come, we ask for a time for repentance. If mercy comes to our aid, we abuse the patience which has spared us. Even when our wounds are scarcely healed, our ungrateful mind forgets. If Thou hearest us quickly, we become haughty from mercy. If Thou art slow, we complain out of impatience. We are willing to serve Thee because of what Thou hast done, yet we do not fear to neglect what Thou willst have us do. O Lord, Thou hast us, the guilty, confessing; be merciful to us, for Thou art kind and loving. We have known that, unless Thou forgiveth us, Thou shalt justly punish us. But with Thee is much pity and abundant forgiveness. Grant, without any merit on our part, what we ask, O Thou, who hast made from nothing those who ask Thee. Have mercy on us crying out to Thee, O Lord. May the voice of the faithful and of the tearful stir up Thy mercy. May that forgiveness not consider that we sin, while it reflects on the fact we ask. Since it is a great misery that we are accused, may the fact that we are miserable make Thy mercy be the greater. We beg Thy help, and before Thee we place the evils and sorrows of our crimes. By our prayers we look for Thy mercy, the very mercy which we have spurned by our sins. Raise us up in Thy mercy, o Lord our God, so that in the fellowship of salvation and the joy of charity, while we long to be saved, we may rejoice in the faith and peace of all the nations. Through Christ our Lord ...
