Contents Ave Mater Dolorosa
Mother, Hail, Immersed in Woes
Varia
Ave, Mater dolorosa,
martyrumque prima rosa,
audi vocem supplicis:
Mother, hail, immersed in woes,
thou the Martyr's earliest rose,
hear my cry, to thee I pray:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone,
tua fidens protectione,
iusti pacem gaudeam.
R. Grant that in death's agony,
putting all my trust in thee,
I may win the just soul's peace.
Per dolorem, o Maria,
tibi Senis prophetia
velut ense, conditum:
By that sorrow, like a sword,
at the holy Simeon's word,
piercing through thy heart and soul:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Per dolorem, quem tulisti,
in Aegyptum quum fugisti,
ut salvares Puerum:
By that sorrow, whelming thee,
when to Egypt thou dost flee,
so to save thy holy Child:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Per dolorem, quando moerens,
inter notos Iesum quaerens,
revocabas perditum:
By that sorrow, when in tears,
seeking Jesus midst His peers,
thou dost find Him once again:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Per dolorem, qui te pressit,
dulcis Natus quum processit
fractus ligni pondere:
By that sorrow, racking thee,
when thy Son's Cross thou dost see
bowing Him beneath its weight.
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Per dolorem cordi infixum,
dum spectabas Crucifixum,
sacra simul victima:
By that sorrow fixed in thee,
whilst He hangs upon the tree,
thou thyself a victim too:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Per dolorem, quando Christi
corpus ulnis excepisti,
e cruce depositum:
By that sorrow, when thy breast
now enfolds the body blest
taken down from of the Cross:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Per dolorem, dum condebas,
pia Mater, et linquebas,
in sepulcro Filium:
By that sorrow, when the tomb
Takes Him from thee to its gloom,
loving Mother, Virgin blest:
R. Fac, ut mortis in agone, ... R. Grant that in death's agony, ...
Christe, cum sit hinc exire,
Da per Matrem me venire
ad palmam victoriae.
Amen.
Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
be Thy Mother my defense,
be Thy Cross my victory.
Amen.
