The Gradual Psalms are from the 13th century. They were developed as an adjunct to the Divine Office for the purpose of praying for the dead. Today they no longer form a part of the Liturgia Horarum.

| Sicubi recitentur in Choro, congrue dicuntur ante Matutinum diei; extra Chorum vero pro temporis opportunitate. Primi quinque Psalmi dicuntur sine Gloria Patri, sed in fine ultimi dicitur Requiem aeternam. | Whenever these are recited in Choir, they are fittingly said before Matins of the day; outside of Choir, they may be said at any chosen time. The first five Psalms are said without the Glory Be, but at the end of the last one, Eternal rest is said. |

Let us pray: Deliver, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the souls of Thy servants and handmaids, and all the faithful departed from the bonds of their sins: grant that they may live and breathe again in a glorious resurrection among all Thy Saints and Elect. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen. |
